I’m not saying I’m proud that these guys killed Brian Wilson, and dragged his corpse and sandbox-piano back to their secret Explorer’s Club Lair to ritualistically gorge themselves on his still-beating heart. But if that’s what it took to write these songs, who are we to question their means? Unlike other groups who draw their inspiration from one, and only one band, The Explorer’s Club both sounds exactly like the target of their unhealthy deviant fixation and write songs that are damn near close to the Beach Boys at their peak. I’ve really only heard two of their songs. But Forever would sound at home on Pet Sounds (nestled between God Only Knows and I Know There’s an Answer), and there’s a good half-dozen songs on Surf’s Up that Don’t Forget the Sun could happily replace. The Explorer’s Club are an almost perfect reincarnation of the band. Mike Love, you’re next.
